Bioelectric Therapy Manages Pain

Your nervous system carries electrical signals to your brain and throughout your body. Bioelectric therapy offers a safe and drug-free way to deal with acute and chronic pain. By interrupting bioelectric currents that send pain messages to your brain, this therapeutic approach decreases painful reactions while also releasing pain-relieving endorphins.

Pain indicators in your nerves have an important purpose: to alert you of dangers. If you get too close to a fire, pain sensors encourage you to pull back. Similarly, if you step on a sharp object or pull a muscle, pain receptors warn your central nervous condition so your reflexes will subconsciously react to what caused the painful conditions.

Conditions to Treat with Bioelectric Therapy

You want pain receptors to alert you to dangerous or life-threatening situations. However, those who suffer from recurring pain will value bioelectric therapy as a beneficial treatment for pains that are not triggered by an immediate threat, dangerous situation, or autoimmune conditions where the immune system malfunctions.

Consider bioelectric therapy for acute and chronic pains. These include arthritis, migraines and headaches, back and muscle pains, blood flow disorders that affect the limbs, and persistent pain caused by reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD).

This neurostimulation may not be beneficial for everyone. Those who are pregnant, wear a pacemaker, have blood clots on their legs and arms, or suffer from bacterial infection should refrain from biostimulation interventions.

How Does Bioelectric Therapy Work?

You will experience this treatment in a comfortable location. Electrodes or other contact points are attached to your skin. They will deliver gentle electric currents at specific nerve locations, at precise dosages set on a computer. You may experience a mild tingling or vibrating sensation, with little or no discomfort. A clinician will be with you throughout the session that lasts approximately 20 minutes.

Bioelectric therapy is one component of a larger pain management program. Professional staff will arrange for a treatment program based on your individual circumstances.  A typical treatment regimen involves 16 to 20 sessions, scheduled in advance. You will be advised whether to fast before a session, as well as if you should have a person drive you home. Those taking insulin or blood-thinning medications may have additional instructions.
